Last week, we announced our weekly blog series called ‘meet mono’ that introduces our team members.
Here at Mono, we’re on a mission to provide internet businesses in Africa access to their customers financial and identity data.
It’s impossible to do this without having a relentless team who have a heart for democratising customer data access in Africa. So we would like to put a spotlight on these amazing talents building Mono.
Next up in this series, we’ll be having a chat with our ‘Head of Design’ — Wale.
What are your responsibilities as a Head of Design?
My primary responsibility is leading, managing and executing high-quality design for our products, web experiences and the Mono brand as a whole. My day-to-day activities include working closely with the engineers to make sure designs are properly implemented & translated. I also support design-related issues, particularly in communicating with the marketing and editorial team to creatively tell our story. In a nutshell, I am at the forefront of all design activities at Mono.
Which of the Mono values resonates with you most?
My favourite Mono Value is “Be better than yesterday”. I always try to learn from my mistakes and get better, both as a designer and as person so this value really resonates with me.
How has your role evolved since you started at Mono?
I’ve been pretty much focused on directing and executing design activities and it’s been both a fun & challenging two months so far, though I think it’s quite early to evaluate the evolution of my role since joining Mono. Right now, I am just focused on designing great products while growing with the company.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
I think that will be keeping up with the pace at which we are growing product-wise. We have so much to build in such a little time but I find the challenge really fun because it’s really helping work even faster than I usually would and our CEO, Abdul has been very helpful.
What’s the best part of the job?
Outside the amazing team and working from home, it’s being responsible for everything design-related. I’m pretty much the only designer on the team for now, so it’s really fun to be able flex my creative muscle across different design areas, from product design projects to websites and landing pages to brand materials and editorials. Pretty fun! (😌)
How’s your work-from-home setup these days?
I work from a mini-studio I set up in the house, it’s a converted dining area in my apartment. It’s a simple setup of an office chair and edge-to-edge table long enough to comfortably house both my iMac and MacBook. I also have a standing shelf I can easily adjust when I want to stand and work to prevent backaches from sitting too often.
Most proud moment?
It’s always a proud moment when I get to use a product I worked on, from OyaPay to BuyCoins and all the amazing products I got to work on during my time at Paystack. But I’d say seeing the live version of OyaPay’s website, it was really my first fully-owned design work after my product design internship in 2017. It was a really proud moment for me.
Favourite song at the moment?
I have no favourite at the moment, but I’m mostly listening to Brymo’s Libel at the moment 🎵
And there you have it, hopefully you got to know him a bit better. He is working along with others to ensure Mono is the easiest way for internet businesses in Africa to get access to your customers data. 💫
